Had a great time going through the site. I particularly liked the easy to read on-line journal. And philosophical merchandise - is all property theft?? I shall return to the site often and hope to join some of the emerging discussion groups and popping into to the live lecture hall.

"Inference 3 - The universe was caused"
It's not even rational to assume the universe was caused.

"Inference 5 - The cause of the universe existed beyond it
Inference 6 - The cause of the universe was/is supernatural in origin"
Not to sure how you made the leap between these two but ok.

Still not sure why people think there is right and wrong...guess it's in our nature. If I see a rock falling down a hill I don't classify it as right or wrong, but rather just what is. We, like everything else includeing the rock, are just matter.

I was impressed with the level of debate and exploration this journal maintains. My very best to the editorial team.

I wanted to comment on Brian Lightbodys piece but found it rather maze-like to find the right place to say my bit. So although it might not be the "proper" thing to do, it will do for the time being, I guess!

Here goes:
Brian Lightbodys piece, "To thine own Self Lie" was so well argued that I was ready to drop my spiritual quest and pick up my paint-brush. But since I wasnt asleep and really quite alert I found that he made a good argument which slackened towards the end. He said, towards the end, I quote:

"It is for this reason, I believe, that Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, associates truth with the spirit of gravity. Contrary to the old saying that the truth will set you free, the truth actually acts as an anchor of sorts. Believing in the 'truth' forces you to identify yourself, with your 'true' self. Whether one is a criminal, pervert, a student or a worker, one must hold this above all: To thine own self be true. One must be true to thyself, and for us moderns this means true to the discourses of psychology, sociology, criminology, and anthropology. In short, true to all of the sciences of man. Of Heidegger's Das Man, administered by Nietzsche's last men--the bureaucrats, politicians, and managers of our modern society. All of those, who would seek to define us, quantify us, analyze us, and in the end discipline us, into accepting that which we supposedly already are, and that which we supposedly were meant to be. It is for this reason that we should embrace Nietzsche's bird like wisdom that allows us to fly above this spirit of gravity; that allows us to create, explore, and most importantly to experiment--to experiment with ourselves. To think of our selves not as an excavation site--something that needs to be uncovered but rather as a blast site, an explosion, in the end a flash of lightning. To realize that the self is not fixed but rather is more akin to a ladder with one hundred rungs—a movement in self- overcoming. "

Heres the trouble:
the sentence is "to thine OWN SELF be true". However B.Lightbody seems to feel that the quest for ones own self stops at what one does, not what one is; so one is "criminal, pervert, a student" in his own words. These may be certain activities that one DOES (to have) but they are not what one is(to be). Being and having are two different things very often unless ones doing is in line with ones being. We are more than what our visiting-card might say about us. Those aspects of our lives are our work, not our selves.

To arrive at who one is, in essence, deep deep down, the probing goes beyond work and approaches silent introspection. Work should be an expression of what one concludes one is, it is not ones essence. More like our speech should express what we really are but often it doesnt. To my mind B.Lightbody makes another quick leap to arrive at the desired conclusion jumping many steps in between.

How can we say that if we examine our own lives come to a certain conclusion we will accept somebody elses verdict on who we are? Either we have arrived at our own conclusions or not. The question, then of accepting labels from professionals doesnt arise. Having totalled my 4 plus 2 and found it to be a valid tried and tested six, I will readily accept a professional telling me that my conclusions are right, however I will then not be in a position to accept seven as the answer because six has already been verified by me as the right answer and absolutely valid.

Mr Lightbody might consider sharing with us the steps he has jumped in this argument. "Who am I?" is often answered by us as if we are talking to the printer who is going to do our visiting-cards. Thankfully we are much more than our work-label reveals about us.

Hi there, First of all I would like to complement u on an excellent site which u haff created. I must say that u heleped me a lot in comprehending all the history text i was forced to read in doing my history module. It was very organised and all the infomation are easy to comprehend. Thanks once again. I would like to suggest if its not too bad of an idea that u add an extension to the history of india to more of a forum or rather a discussion on certain historical issues especially where politics is concern and where people and even u urself can post ur opinion on how u perceive the whole thing (e.g: how close was the accusation that the fast carried by Gandhi was more of an emotional blackmail..etc) and .. well it would be nice if you could add some info about Jinnah or at least try to view it from both sides because the independence of India cannot be summarised by Gandhi alone though he may have a lot to do with it.... nevertheless these are just suggestions. Still I simply am grateful to have come across your site! esp since there is other dimension to it such as the entertainmant sites esp the cinema..i adore hindi movies So.. keep up with the good work and i would love to see the site again when it updates

Every thing is fair in war therefore it kills the truth and beaty. It is against peace which is necessary for human development.I think philosophy promote peace, so we shuold try for peace which will change the world as the Marx said Philosophys funtion is to change the world.

Greetings to everyone here, It is rather nice to fine a community of philosophy enthusiasts in the cyberspace and to some extent an adventure since there are not many of those. Perhaps, just like islands of insight in the sea of chaos these philosophy sites are places to behold. So, for those who want to know, here is another one--and it is one extremely good philosophy site--which I have a really please to stumble upon... Just in case you want to be brought back into the vortex of extreme reality from lethargic sleep. The URL is http://www.sitepalace.com/philosophy/ only be warned it is not for fainthearted! It might shake your very foundations but perhaps thats exactly what GREAT philosophy is meant to do. In any case, it was my please to find you within this site, here, and to share my thought with you. J.C. Hutchinson

I just started a basic Philosophy course to fill a square for my bachelor's degree in Social Sciences. The textbook just happens to have the title "The Examined Life" so I decided to plug the phrase into my Google search engine. I am fascinated by all there is to Philosophy that somehow escaped my notice in all the other college courses I have taken over the past few years. Socrates was so right about the unexamined life being not worth living. Thanks for being here.
