Please Read the Following Concerning this Alternative FormatIt is now possible to download a PDF version of the current issue of The Examined Life On-Line Philosophy Journal. This is a trial offer currently. If there is enough support from The Examined Life community for this project, it will continue with future editions and possibly the archives as well. It is up to the readers to determine whether this is an option they would prefer to have. An initial question might be, "Since The Examined Life is currently available for free in HTML format, why should I want a PDF copy of the journal?" The most important answer to this is pagination. It is currently difficult, if not impossible, to keep original page numbers or produce sequential page numbers when using HTML format. PDF, however, allows the pagination to remain in tact. This is important for the purposes of citation. If one references a document on the web, and only gives the URL (Uniform Resource Locator, that is--web address), then if the document is long (and some articles are over 20 pages), the reader who looks up the citation might be hard pressed to find the exact location of the citation. Having the document in PDF, however, allows the author and the reader to pinpoint the exact location of the citation. Moreover, no universal standardized format for internet citations currently exists, and this further complicates the matter. Therefore, having the document in PDF circumvents all of these problems. The PDF edition of The Examined Life is currently free, and contains all of the articles in the present edition. This is subject change depending on demand (as stated above, this is an experiment). It is possible that future PDF edition will have a small one time fee for downloading the current edition or a bargain yearly subscription fee for downloading all editions in that format (the possible future fee would cover the production costs). You can download it here (TEL16thedition.pdf - 836kb). It is recommended that you right click and select "save as" and save it to your hard drive. The HTML version of The Examined Life will continue to be free even if the PDF version does not. There are no plans or thoughts of changing this by the editorship. As always, you are free to view and print HTML articles from the journal at will. The PDF version is only an alternatives for the readership.
